Sports Massage: Does It Actually Improve Performance?
Athletes train hard. Muscles get sore and fatigued. Massage helps them recover, and presumably they perform better. But research suggests a more nuanced picture.
A comprehensive review examined sports massage for performance, recovery, injury rehabilitation and psychological readiness. The takeaway? Massage may help athletes—but not always for the reasons traditionally assumed.
Does Massage Make You Perform Better?
There is little evidence that massage directly improves strength, sprint performance or endurance. A massage before an event probably won't make someone faster or stronger. Prolonged massage immediately before explosive activity could even be unhelpful if it replaces an appropriate active warm-up.
That doesn't make sports massage useless. It means we need to be clear about what we're asking it to do.
Where Massage May Be More Useful
Research is more encouraging when massage is considered a recovery tool. It may reduce the experience of delayed-onset muscle soreness and temporarily improve flexibility or range of motion.
An athlete may not need massage to become physiologically stronger. Sometimes they need to feel comfortable enough to move well again.
What About “Flushing Lactic Acid”?
This explanation deserves retirement.
Massage is often described as a way to “flush lactic acid” from tired muscles, but that oversimplifies exercise physiology. Lactate is not simply toxic waste trapped inside sore muscles. The body processes it relatively quickly after exercise, while soreness that develops days later involves different processes.
If an athlete feels better after massage, we don't need to explain it by claiming we've drained metabolic waste from their muscles.
Feeling Better Is Part of Recovery
Objective measurements matter, but athletes are human beings, not machines. Perceived soreness, stress, confidence, sleep and feeling ready to train again all matter too.
If massage helps an athlete feel less sore, more relaxed and more comfortable moving, it may contribute meaningfully to recovery—even without directly increasing strength or endurance.
Helping someone recover is different from making them perform better. Both can have value.
Sports Massage Doesn't Need Superpowers
Sports massage becomes more credible when we stop asking it to do things it probably can't.
It doesn't need to flush toxins, remove lactic acid or physically repair damaged muscles. Massage can simply be one part of a broader recovery strategy alongside training, nutrition, sleep, rest and appropriate rehabilitation.
For some athletes, that means less soreness or easier movement. For others, it may simply mean time to relax while someone else takes care of them.
Maybe Recovery Is Enough
Sports massage doesn't have to make someone run faster to be worthwhile. If an athlete leaves the table feeling less sore, more comfortable, relaxed and ready to train, that's meaningful.
The research may not support every traditional explanation for why massage helps. We can let go of explanations that don't hold up while keeping the benefits that do.
Massage doesn't need to create better athletes. Sometimes helping athletes feel better in the bodies they're already training is enough.
